Applicants must be high school seniors who participate in the NOSB at least once during their high school career, have a career goal in the ocean sciences or a marine-related field, and demonstrate academic success and integrity.

Apart from completing the application, qualified students are required to submit the following materials by email (PDFs preferred): an official transcript (if the student's GPA is not on a 4.0 scale, the student must provide a conversion to the 4.0 grade scale signed by their principal or counselor); an official score sheet / results from either the SAT or the ACT; two recommendation letters (one must be from an academic source, such as a teacher or a coach); two essays on assigned topics; and proof of admission to an institution of higher learning (if available currently).
