Finding an Accredited Distance Learning Program
With the number of degree mills camping out in counterfeit domains that look like
impressive universities, it can be especially difficult to distinguish whether the
distance learning program that you are interested in is in fact legitimate.
Some of the more reputable accredited online learning institutions:
- Ashford University Online
- Boston University Online
- Colorado Technical University Online
- DeVry University Online
- Florida Metropolitan University (FMU) Online
- The Art Institute Online
- Tulane University
- Kaplan University Online
- University of Phoenix Online
- Walden University
While this isn’t a complete list of online options, it is a great place to start.
If you find another program that interests you, make sure that it is accredited.
Visit the Council for Higher Education Accreditation website for an updated list
of accrediting agencies and approved universities.
Another idea worth considering: combine online courses with traditional courses.
Most community colleges and state universities (all of which are accredited) offer
distance learning options. If commuting is a possibility for you, investigate the
advantages of combining these learning techniques. Typically you will find that
the overall quality of the education you receive will increase without forcing you
to give up the flexibility of your schedule.
In my own experience, the balance that comes from taking a couple online courses
alongside traditional classroom classes was incredibly beneficial. The classroom
dynamic is stimulating; peers and the professor help to motivate you to achieve
at your highest level and it is easy to find help if you find some of the material
difficult or confusing. The online courses on the other hand, encouraged me to take
an interest in subjects on my own time and prompted me to take self-discipline seriously.
Both class types do not work well for everyone, but it is certainly worth trying
out all of the options. Just be sure to do your homework if you are considering
a degree program that allows you to earn all of your credit online—you want your
diploma to count for something!
