The Resolve to Evolve Scholarship is about more than making resolutions- it's about
evoking change by doing so and, subsequently, furthering our own evolution. We must
continue to react proactively and progressively to challenges, however daunting.
The idea behind the "R2E" Essay Scholarship is to offer a solution and to be constructively
critical rather than just point fingers at or find fault with a given administration
or organization. A winning essay will not only get you up to $3,000 toward the next
step in your education, but will also be forwarded on to the appropriate officials
in the hope that we can do our part to be part of the solution.
Part I
Entrants may choose one of two topics about which to compose their essay:
Question #1 No Child Left Behind?
Has the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 been successful in fulfilling its purpose?
Why or why not?
Question #2 Higher Education at a Higher Cost
How has the rising cost of a college education affected students and families? What
can the government do to offset any adverse effects or related financial pressures?
Only original, unpublished essays will be accepted. Any writing found to be anything
other than an original work of the applicant will be disqualified. Please see
Official Rules for more information.
Part II
In addition to providing a formal essay to one of the above questions, the applicant
should give a shorter, informal response that demonstrates why attending college
is important to him and a brief outline of academic and career goals. The response
should include an answer to the following question:
What do you feel will be your biggest obstacle in attending college, and, if able
to attend, how do you think your degree will help you achieve your goals?
Part III
Submit a letter of reference that specifically addresses your potential and provides
support for your receipt of scholarship assistance. The letter should be from an
adult who knows you well enough to speak authoritatively about your character and
abilities, such as a teacher, counselor or other school faculty. If none of the
aforementioned is able to assist you, a parent or other adult relative will suffice.
Scholarships will be awarded for the top seven essays:
- First Place: $3,000
- Second Place: $2,000
- Five runners-up will receive $1,000 apiece
The deadline for entries is March 31, 2008. Entries received that are postmarked
before December 1, 2007 or after March 31, 2008 will be disqualified. Winners will
be notified on June 25, 2008 and announced on July 31, 2008. Prizes will be awarded
on July 31, 2008.
