Appaloosa Youth Foundation Lew & Jo Eklund Educational Scholarship
The Sagebrush Circuit—Lew & JoAnn Eklund Educational scholarship, in the amount of $2,000 annual award, is funded in its entirety by donations made by the Appaloosa Youth Foundation from the dissolution of funds of the Sagebrush Circuit. It is the highest attainable scholarship available from the Appaloosa Youth Foundation.
Applicants must be members of the ApHC or be the son or daughter of an ApHC member. Applicants must be a college junior, senior or graduate student. They must be pursuing a degree in a major field of study that is closely related to the equine industry.
Applicants must currently maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale, or the equivalent 5.2 on a 6.0 scale. Each applicant must provide, or have submitted on their behalf, three letters of recommendation. An official college transcript must accompany each application.
Each application is carefully reviewed by the Scholarship Committee of the Appaloosa Youth Foundation. Applications are evaluated based on career goals, involvement in the Appaloosa and equine industries, grade point average (improvement in GPA will be looked at carefully), the essay each applicant must submit with their application, extra curricular equine activities, extra curricular school and community activities, leadership potential, sportsmanship, and general knowledge and accomplishments in horsemanship.
Scholarships are awarded annually, preceding the school year for which they must be used. The check awarded from the scholarship fund will be made payable only to the institution the recipient is attending. It is non-transferable and must be used within one year from the date of award. If not used, it will be awarded to the first alternate.
An applicant will not be considered if they are a member of the immediate family of an employee, representative or National Director of the ApHC.
