Benny L. O'Berry Educational Scholarship
The Benny L. O'Berry Educational Scholarship is a scholarship in memory of my father and the first black student to graduate from the University of Miami with a bachelor of science in education. The scholarship is to provide poor, underprivileged students with financial assistance and the opportunity to receive a college education.
The award is to be given each year to students maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or higher to black students who have a financial need and a desire to get into college. The scholarship will be awarded to students currently enrolled or who have been accepted into a college or university seeking to pursue an undergraduate degree leading towards a bachelor's degree in the field of their choice. The candidates will maintain a GPA of 2.5 or higher, the candidates must have volunteered in any civic or social organizations and actively participated in community service in his or her community, maintain good grades academically and appear on the honor roll or dean's list, and have outstanding achievements.
The candidates must be high school students and will graduate during the current academic school year or a college freshmen enrolled into a four-year institution in the state of Florida. Candidate must also be a United States citizen and reside in Miami Dade County in Florida. The candidates are required to write a 500-word essay explaining in detail what experiences have influenced their decision to pursue a career in education and/or business or a degree of their choice and how these experiences will help them in the future.
