Stephen W. Cavanaugh Scholarship Fund
The Stephen W. Cavanaugh Scholarship Fund was established in January of 2007 by Louisiana Workers’ Compensation Corporation (“LWCC”) through the Baton Rouge Area Foundation to honor the memory of Stephen W. Cavanaugh. Mr. Cavanaugh served as the President and CEO of LWCC until his death on November 15, 2006. He was an extraordinary leader who made lasting contributions to the insurance industry in Louisiana.
The purpose of the Fund is to provide scholarships to deserving Louisiana students who are or will be majoring in an insurance-related field at a Louisiana university, college or community college.
Students meeting the criteria will be awarded a scholarship to be used toward the following, in order of priority: tuition and fees; room and board; books and supplies; and commuting expenses. The scholarship recipient will be selected by a Scholarship Advisory Committee. This year, the Fund will make available a four-year scholarship, payable $1,000 a semester for eight semesters, with a total value of $8,000 to a qualified candidate.
To maintain the scholarship, the recipient must maintain a minimum 2.5 overall grade point average each semester and continue to demonstrate good character. At the end of each semester, the recipient will provide the Foundation with an official transcript, proof of full-time enrollment for the next semester, and a signed statement verifying the student is still pursuing a degree in an insurance related field. The subsequent scholarship check will be issued only upon receipt of these materials.
In making its decision, the Scholarship Advisory Committee will use the following criteria:
- Participation of extracurricular activities, community and public service opportunities
-Evidence of leadership potential
- Ability to make satisfactory academic progress toward a degree or a major in an academic discipline which relates to the insurance industry
- Grade Point Average (GPA)
- ACT or SAT scores
- Quality and depth of essay
- Quality of academic and personal recommendations
All applications will be notified by mail of the Committee’s decisions within two months of the due date. Contact Stewart Jones, Donor Services, at (225) 387-6126 or a firstname.lastname@example.org with questions.
