Students who struggle with or succeed in their fight against cancer deserve assistance in their pursuit of a postsecondary education. According to the National Cancer Institute, about 8 million Americans have a history of cancer. The many ambitious students who attend college despite their health setbacks display impressive resolve, one recognized by many scholarship providers. To help students fighting cancer afford an education, numerous cancer foundations have created scholarships that have made college an option. Take a look at the following cancer scholarships for a few examples. To find additional awards, you may conduct a free college scholarship search at Scholarships.com. Below is a list of organizations and contact information for each of them. We will be continuing to add to this list as more cancer-related scholarships come to our awareness.

ACS Cancer Survivor College Scholarship
The American Cancer Society Cancer Survivor College Scholarship Program gives young cancer survivors the opportunity to pursue their post-secondary education from an accredited university, community college, or vocational technical school. Eligibility: - Must be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 21. Applicants must be age 25 or younger at the time of application. - Scheduled to graduate from high school and/or continuing college in the upcoming school year. - Must be a U.S. citizen and a resident of Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington or Wyoming. More

ACS Mid-South Division College Scholarship
The Mid-South Division of the American Cancer Society offers college scholarships for childhood cancer survivors. To be eligible for the Mid-South Division scholarship you must: - Have had a diagnosis of cancer before age 19. - Be under the age of 25 at the time of application. - Be a legal resident of Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, or Floyd or Clark counties in Indiana, and a United States citizen. - Have a GPA of at least 2.5 (based on a 4.0 scale) or GED equivalent. More

ACS Youth Scholarship Program
A limited number of scholarships will be awarded this year for students enrolled in an Institution (University, College, Technical or Vocational School). The awards will be paid directly to the Institution of choice and will supplement the fall semester tuition costs. Ashley Tamburri Scholarship
The Ashley Tamburri Scholarship is a four-year renewable tuition scholarship administered by The Community Foundation of Frederick County. The scholarship is awarded in memory of Ashley Elizabeth Tamburri. When Ashley received her diagnosis of a brain tumor, she began to redefine her plans and goals for living. Throughout her cancer treatment she actively clarified those goals and engaged all in all facets of life. Ashley died on June 24, 1999, at the age of 16. The scholarship program was established to ensure that other teens like Ashley, who have faced or are facing cancer, are encouraged to strive toward achieving their educational goals. More

ASRT Education and Research Foundation Scholarships
The ASRT Education and Research Foundation offers a number of entry-level and professional scholarships to assist educator therapists who are pursuing their baccalaureate, master's or doctoral degree to enhance their position as a program director, faculty member, clinical coordinator or clinical instructor. Scholarships of $5,000 each are awarded annually. Cancer For College
Cancer for College awards scholarships to current and former cancer patients who are currently attending either a four year accredited university, junior college and/or graduate school. Scholarships applicants must already be accepted to a university and/or attending a junior college. All applicants will receive confirmation of their application within three weeks of submission. Cancer Survivors' Fund
Scholarships from the Cancer Survivors' Fund are granted to cancer survivors for their college educations. Recipients are selected by a committee based on applicants' personal hardship and financial need. To be eligible, an applicant must satisfy the following requirements: - The applicant must be a cancer survivor or currently diagnosed with cancer, and does not have to be receiving treatment to qualify. - The applicant is enrolled in or accepted for enrollment in an accredited undergraduate school. More

Candlelighters Scholarship Fund
The Board of Candlelighters has established an annual Scholarship Fund from which they will grant educational scholarships to young people with a history of childhood cancer. The scholarship funds shall be granted for college education and/or vocational training and used specifically for: Tuition, room and board, books, and educational support. Applicants must have been treated at UT M.D. Anderson or Texas Children's Hospital in Houston to be eligible. The applicant may be from outside the United States; however, the institution of higher learning must be within the United States. More

Childhood Cancer Survivor Scholarships
The Society's High Plains Division is proud to offer academic or vocational scholarships to select applicants. Our Childhood Cancer Survivor Scholarships offer undergraduate educational or vocational trade school support for students who have survived any cancer during their childhood. The number of scholarships awarded is dependent on the amount of funding available, and the number of complete applications received. Dr. and Mrs. D.N. Luciani Foundation Scholarship
Our mission is to help ease the financial burden of a college/university education for students who have lost a parent to cancer. Applications for the Scholarship Award must be submitted directly to the Dr. and Mrs. D.N. Luciani Foundation and all decisions are final. Number of scholarships and amounts awarded will vary year to year. The award is a one year scholarship in the amount of $1000. Eligibility is limited to individuals who have lost a parent to cancer. Friends of Scott Foundation Scott Delgadillo College Scholarship
The Friends of Scott Foundation Scott Delgadillo College Scholarship will be awarded to a cancer patient or cancer survivor based on financial need and personal hardship. Eligibility Requirements: * Applicant must be a cancer survivor or currently receiving treatment. * Applicant must be enrolled in or accepted for enrollment in an accredited undergraduate or graduate school. * Applicant must submit a copy of the acceptance letter from the college or university of choice. Jay's World Childhood Cancer Foundation
One of the many ways that the Foundation is helping children who have been diagnosed with cancer and their families is to award them a scholarship. To be eligible for this scholarship the child must be either cured of cancer, in remission, or able to attend college while undergoing treatment and a resident of New York State. Komen College Scholarship Program
The Susan G. Komen for the Cure College Scholarship Award Program offers college scholarships of up to $10,000 a year over a four-year period. The program assists young adults in their academic pursuits. Applicant Qualifications: * Must have lost a parent/guardian to breast cancer or be a breast cancer survivor diagnosed at 25 years or younger * Must be a high school senior, college freshman, sophomore or junior * Must plan to attend a state-supported college or university in the state where they permanently reside (students in Washington DC can attend state-supported schools in Maryland and Virginia) * Must have a high school and/or college GPA of 2. More

LIFE Lessons Scholarship Program
The LIFE Lessons Scholarship Program is open only to legal residents of the 50 United States and the District of Columbia, who are between 17 and 24 years of age, have experienced the death of a parent or legal guardian, and are currently enrolled in, or have been accepted to, a college, university or trade school within the 50 United States or District of Columbia. MaryEllen Locher Foundation Scholarship
The MaryEllen Locher Foundation scholarship fund is a national fund established in 2002 by a mother diagnosed with Breast Cancer who once worried about her own child's education. The MaryEllen Locher Foundation provides scholarships for secondary education especially to children who have lost a parent to breast cancer and children of breast cancer survivors. Student must be accepted as a full time enrollee at an accredited 2 or 4 year college or university. Student essays, grades, and financial need will all be considered in awarding this scholarship. More

Michael A. Hunter Memorial Scholarship
The Michael A. Hunter Memorial Scholarship Fund awards annual scholarships to help improve the quality of life for those affected by leukemia. The focus of the scholarship is on supporting secondary education for leukemia patients and/or children of non-surviving leukemia patients. This scholarship is offered nationwide. NCCF Scholarship Program
The National Collegiate Cancer Foundation was established to provide services and support to young adults whose lives have been impacted by cancer and who have continued with their education throughout treatment or after their treatment. These $1,000 competitive awards will be judged based on the criteria listed below. Oncology Nursing Foundation Doctoral Scholarships
Applicants to the Oncology Nursing Society's Doctoral Scholarships must already be Registered Nurses. Two different awards are given annually, the $5,000 Roberta Pierce Scofield Doctoral Scholarship and the $3,000 Ann Olson Memorial Doctoral Scholarship. The candidate must be currently enrolled in (or applying to) a doctoral nursing degree or related program and enrolled in the coming academic year, have a current license to practice as a registered nurse, and must have an interest in and commitment to oncology nursing. More

Oncology Nursing Foundation Master's Scholarships
Applicants for the Oncology Nursing Foundation Master's Scholarships must already be Registered Nurses. The candidate must be currently enrolled in (or applying to) a master's nursing degree or post-master's certificate (CNS or NP) program at an NLN or CCNE accredited School of Nursing for the upcoming year. The candidate must have a current license to practice as a registered nurse and must have an interest in and commitment to oncology nursing. At the end of each year of scholarship participation, the nurse shall submit a summary describing the education activities in which he/she participated. More

Pink Ribbon Scholarship
The Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Fund was established at the El Dorado Community Foundation in 1999. The Community Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization, that serves El Dorado County, CA with a mission dedicated to strengthening our community both now and for future generations. The mission of The Pink Ribbon Breast Cancer Fund is to increase awareness and education about breast cancer, and to provide scholarships to high school seniors who have experienced a cancer diagnosis in a member of their immediate family. More

PinkRose Breast Cancer Scholarship
Eligibility for the PinkRose Foundation's Breast Cancer Scholarship is limited to individuals who are legal residents of the United States of America, under the age of 25 who have lost a parent or legal guardian to breast cancer. Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Applicants must be pursuing post secondary education or certificate training. R.O.C.K. College Scholarship Program
The American Cancer Society's R.O.C.K. (Reaching Out to Cancer Kids) College Scholarship Program is an award-winning college scholarship opportunity exclusively for students with a history of cancer. The program gives young cancer survivors a chance to pursue an undergraduate degree from an accredited Florida university, community college, or vocational technical school. ELIGIBILITY: Florida Residents who have had a diagnosis of cancer before age 21 are eligible. Ryan Mullaly Second Chance Fund Scholarship
The Ryan Mullaly Second Chance Fund is a non-profit corporation offering scholarship assistance to young people who are fighting cancer. We are looking for young men and women whose high school years were disrupted by cancer and whose ability to qualify for most scholarships was precluded by the extensive absenteeism and physical disabilities which result from chemotherapy and radiation. The financial impact on families dealing with cancer is significant. In addition to many expenses not covered by health insurance, families often experience a substantial loss in income as one parent must stop working to care for the ill child. More

Scholarships for Survivors
The purpose of these scholarships is to provide support to patients seeking to initiate or complete a course of study that has been interrupted or delayed by a diagnosis of cancer or other critical or life threatening disease. * Must maintain an overall 3.0 GPA * Must be a full time student. * Must sign an agreement to complete 20 hours of community service for the year the scholarship will be dispensed and provide PAF with a written confirmation from a supervisor when that service has been completed. More

Stephen T. Marchello Scholarship Foundation
The Stephen T. Marchello Scholarship Foundation provides scholarships for current high school graduates who are survivors of childhood cancer. Currently, we only give scholarships in CO, CA, AZ, and MT. The amount of the scholarship varies from a $500 one time grant to a four year $10,000 scholarship. SuperSibs!, a non-profit organization whose mission is to honor, support and recognize the brothers and sisters of children with cancer, will award fifteen $1,000 SuperSibs! The Ulman Cancer Fund for Young Adults National College Scholarship Program was established to support the financial needs of young adults whose lives have been impacted by cancer and are seeking higher education. These competitive awards are offered through five different scholarship categories which are selected by the Scholarship Committee based on a set of pre-determined criteria. Working Against Cancer’s Survival Scholarship Program assists young adult cancer survivors (ages 30 yrs and under) by providing awards toward academic and vocational education. Young Cancer Survivors Are Living For The Future
Since 1999, the American Cancer Society, Great Lakes Division Foundation has proudly supported young cancer survivors with scholarships as they pursue ambitious career goals. To date, more than 800 scholarships have been awarded to students in the Great Lakes area. A limited number of tuition scholarships are available for the upcoming 2008-2009 school year.
