Scholarship Description

Humanists of Greater Portland (HGP) is pleased to sponsor an annual essay contest to encourage Portland area college-bound high school seniors in their education and in learning more about Humanism.

Scholarship Details

  • Annual essay contest with scholarship awards
  • Essay length: 750-1,000 words
  • New topics announced each year

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to college-bound high school seniors in the Portland Metropolitan Area
  • Applicants must demonstrate an understanding of Humanism
  • Submission requirements include an essay, parental permission, and school transcripts with a minimum GPA of 3.0

Application Process

  1. Receive application materials from school counselors or download from HGP's website
  2. Write an original essay of 750-1,000 words on the provided topic
  3. Submit the essay, parental permission, and transcripts by the specified mid-spring deadline
  4. Winners must provide proof of post-secondary plans to receive scholarship funds

We expect you to address core values of humanism as an applied philosophical worldview. You may address a range of applications including, but not limited to personal experiences, policy applications regarding local to global issues, current events, and historical patterns. The incorporation of sources and references is strongly encouraged.
