Now Debate This: How Can America Achieve Energy Independence?

What: Now Debate This, America’s only national educational debate and $250,000 scholarship contest for high school students will be exploring the topic, “How Can America Achieve Energy Independence?” Now Debate This is an immersion study and scholarship competition that challenges young people to learn about contemporary issues through the lens of history and to use the invaluable skill of debate to present solutions. 16 semi-finalists will be chosen and announced in May. These students will explore energy sources across the United States in late June during a two-week study tour. The tour will culminate with a debate tournament in August. In the final debate between two finalist, the winner will earn a $150,000 scholarship. The runner up will earn a $50,000 scholarship, and the remaining 14 finalists will split the remaining $50,000. Additionally, students will be provided laptop computers and video cameras to use on the study-immersion tour.

Requirements: Students must be high school juniors during the 2008-2009 school year. Students must construct a three minute video to the Now Debate This YouTube channel by March 31. Videos should address the prompt, “Describe what energy independence looks like in your community.”
