Scholarship Description

The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) is the Commonwealth of Virginia’s coordinating agency for higher education. As an entity of the Commonwealth of Virginia government, SCHEV exists to serve the public interest and to assist the state’s system of higher education. Their mission is "to advocate and promote the development and operation of an educationally and economically sound, vigorous, progressive, and coordinated system of higher education in the Commonwealth of Virginia and to lead state-level strategic planning and policy development and implementation based on research and analysis.

The purpose of the Virginia Commonwealth Award is to assist undergraduate students with financial need and graduate students to pay part of their college costs. In order for an undergraduate student to be eligible for an award, a student must be admitted into a Virginia public two or four-year college/university, be enrolled at least half-time in an approved degree, certificate, or diploma program and be a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen. In order for a graduate student to be eligible for an award, a student must be enrolled full-time in an approved graduate degree program at a participating public Virginia college or university and meet requirements established by the granting institution. Students apply for this award by completing the FAFSA. The application and awarding processes are administered by the financial aid office at each Virginia public college or university.
