Scholarship Description

The Empowered Scholars program awards scholarships to enrolled undergraduate students who volunteer in their communities to use toward their education expenses. Scholars give their time to community-based organizations, student-led organizations and other groups that address food insecurity, safe housing, job opportunities, access to health care and other conditions that can result in health disparities.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Enrolled undergraduate students in an accredited institution
  • Active volunteer in community-based or student-led organizations
  • Commitment to addressing health disparities through volunteer work

Application Process

  1. Provide proof of current enrollment in an undergraduate program
  2. Submit documentation of volunteer work addressing health disparities
  3. Complete the application form and submit it before the deadline

All currently enrolled college freshmen, sophomores and juniors who are working to improve community health and wellness are eligible to apply. Previous applicants’ efforts to improve health equity have included advocating for access to healthy food, volunteering at a health clinic, working in a student health program and fundraising for a cause that promotes health equity.

In addition to the financial aid, Empowered Scholars are invited to participate in speaking engagements and media opportunities arranged by the American Heart Association.
