  • The California-Nevada Section of the American Water Works Association is offering both undergraduate and graduate scholarships for the upcoming academic year for students interested in a career in a drinking water related field. The Section is offering four scholarships for those pursuing a two-year or four-year college degree program, two $5,000 scholarships for those pursuing graduate studies at the masters or doctorate levels, two $1,000 One AWWA Operator scholarships for those studying to be a drinking water operator and one $1,000 undergraduate scholarship in the memory of Linda Contreras. Undergraduate scholarships are applicable to community college or four-year college programs, including (but not limited to) water/wastewater treatment plant operator, field/distribution system operator, chemistry or lab tech, biology/ecology, environmental or civil engineering, mechanical/electrical/plumbing trades, etc. For more information or to apply, please visit the scholarship provider's website.

Student Loan Debt Forgiveness for U.S. Military Veterans

The U.S. Department of Education plans to forgive $1.3 billion in outstanding student loan debt for roughly 25,000 disabled U.S. military veterans, beginning in July. Until now, the Department of Education had required veterans to formally apply for student loan forgiveness - having them complete "unnecessary paperwork to secure relief from their student loans, even after the Department of Veterans Affairs had found that a veteran met the legal requirements for disability-related loan forgiveness." In 2018, over 30,000 totally and permanently disabled veterans eligible for student loan forgiveness had not completed the necessary paperwork; a majority of which had defaulted on their student loans.
