Scholarship Description

The SMART Scholarship-for-Service Program is a combined educational and workforce development opportunity for STEM students. SMART offers scholarships for undergraduate, master's, and doctoral students pursuing a STEM degree. SMART offers two scholarship opportunities, the SMART Scholarship and the Ronald V. Dellums Memorial SMART Scholarship. All scholarship recipients receive full tuition, annual stipends, internships, and guaranteed civilian employment with the Department of Defense after graduation. Applications are open annually from August 1 to the first Friday in December.

Eligibility

  • Be a citizen of the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or United Kingdom
  • Have and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • Be currently pursuing, or intend to pursue in fall, a degree in a SMART STEM discipline
  • Be requesting between 1-5 years of degree funding. Degree funding will start in the August following your application
  • Complete summer internships
  • Accept a one-for-one post graduation service commitment as a civilian employee of the Department of Defense

The Science, Mathematics, and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship-for-Service Program also requires you to be a rising freshman pursuing a bachelor’s degree by the program start date. High school seniors are eligible to apply. Applicants for the Dellums SMART Scholarship should not have any previous college experience.
