  • Scholarship Description
  • Though about 40% of the world’s workforce is women, according to data from the Inter-Parliamentary Union, only 25.7% of all national parliamentarians were female as of 1 September 2021. Because Zonta International believes that young women are the key to women’s advancement in the field of public service, it offers the Young Women in Public Affairs (YWPA) Award, which recognizes young women, ages 16-19, for demonstrating leadership skills and commitment to public service and civic causes, and encourages them to continue their participation in public and political life.

The program operates at the Zonta club, district/region and international levels. Zonta International offers 37 international awards of US$5,000. Each district/region may submit one applicant for consideration for an international scholarship. The five largest districts may submit a second applicant for a total of two applicants. Hello, I'm Magda and I'm a senior at East Leyden High school. I'm an immigrant, three years ago my family and I left the life we all knew and were used to for a better life. As a woman my whole life I had to show the world that I'm as equal as men. When I was in middle school the boys would always be treated differently, kind of better. I am not sure why but I would always want to prove myself. Show that I was as good as they were. I always believed in equality and that's what I fight in life. I want to become a lawyer. It's been my dream since I was 4 years old. I want to show that women can be as powerful as men. I want to make a difference and show young women that they can be whoever they want to be.

My name is Sandra Nikprelevic, and I am a student at Oakland University. I've been working very hard to advance my knowledge not just after high school or college, but throughout the rest of my life. Coming from an immigrant family drove me to achieve great things in life since I knew they didn't have the same options as I did growing up, and I wanted to be the first in my family to be able to fulfill their aspirations as a first generation college student. I knew right immediately that I wanted to pursue my mother's ambition of getting into the engineering sector since women back then didn't get the chance to accomplish what they wanted to do. Receiving this scholarship will be really beneficial to me. Even if times were different back then, it is vital for us girls and women to stand together because we live in a modern and evolved world where if you set your mind to something you are passionate about, you can achieve incredible things.

My name is McKenzie Guillory and I am a senior at Eunice High School. I am the oldest of five and I am working very hard to further my education after high school. I am currently enrolled in a dual-enrollment program through LSUE and plan to transfer to Xavier University-New Orleans to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse. My inspiration of becoming a nurse comes from seeing my mother work her way from being a certified nursing assistant at the age of 20 yrs then continuing her education and becoming an LPN at the age of 22 yrs. She is currently enrolled in her third semester of the Associates of Nursing Program at LSUE at the age of 34 yrs and will complete her schooling in May 2021. She has taught me that no matter what obstacle is thrown in my way, there's always a way around it to better myself especially in gaining a higher education. I have maintained a g.p.a. of 3.8-4.0 throughout my schooling and continue to push for better. If I was awarded this scholarship it would be put towards furthering my education and would be greatly appreciated.
