Scholarship Description

Tom Hart humbly volunteered on BBB Serving New Jersey’s Board of Directors from 2001 through 2016. He served as Chairman of the Board from 2005 to 2007 and as Chair of the Finance Committee for the majority of his tenure. Mr. Hart was a passionate advocate of BBB’s values of excellence, integrity, teamwork, trust and respect. This Scholarship honors the commitment Tom so kindly and selflessly made in support of BBB’s mission to be the leader in advancing marketplace trust.

Scholarship Details

  • Award: $3,000 scholarship
  • Funds will be distributed directly to the chosen college upon verification of enrollment
  • Scholarship must be applied towards school-related expenses

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be a full-time resident of New Jersey
  • Plan to attend an accredited college or university in the United States on a full-time basis
  • High school senior graduating the year they apply for the scholarship

Submission Period: The official submission period for entries is from January 15th to February 15th. Complete entries must be received by BBB by 5:00 p.m. Eastern on the deadline date.

Scholarship Presentation: The scholarship will be presented in April at BBB’s Annual Meeting.

Additional Information: The BBB in New Jersey does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, creed, gender, sexual orientation, handicap, or national or ethnic origin. Directors, employees, contractors, and/or volunteers (current or former) of the BBB of New Jersey, or any member of their family, are ineligible to receive this scholarship.

Criteria and Documentation

The criteria for the BBB Tom Hart Memorial Scholarship include:

  • Academic (40%): Enclose a copy of your most recent transcript. Describe your post-secondary education plans. Describe any awards received relating to your academic achievement.
  • Essay (40%): How will your future career and your personal contributions to society help make the world a better place? The essay must be 500 words or less, single-spaced on one 8.5” x 11” page.
  • Leadership (10%): Describe any extracurricular, work, or school-related activities. Include awards/honors or offices held.
  • Community Service (10%): Describe activities outside of school and within your community, such as religious or special community involvement. Include awards/honors or offices held.

Additional Required Documentation:

  • Completed entry form
  • Two (2) letters of recommendation (e.g., church, school official, coach, employer, community leader). Each letter should be 300 words or less, single-spaced on one 8.5” x 11” page.
  • Please retain a copy of your completed entry. All submitted entries become the property of Better Business Bureau (BBB) and cannot be returned.

The applicant must be a full-time resident of New Jersey. The applicant must plan to attend an accredited college or university in the United States on a full-time basis. The applicant must be graduating high school and have a desire to continue his/her education. The application period is from Jan 15 to Feb 15 every year.
