Applicants of the Sojourner Truth Scholarship for Social Justice must be Hampshire or Hampden County Massachusetts public high school seniors who have been active in social justice efforts and plan to attend college or postsecondary school. Applicants must submit an essay (800-1200 words, typed and double-spaced) describing their experiences working for social justice in their schools or communities and explains how their work relates to the life and works of Sojourner Truth.
Each year the Sojourner Truth Memorial Committee awards scholarships to graduating high school seniors from local public high schools. These scholarships are awarded to students who demonstrate in an essay their experience and commitment to social justice and equality. Many scholarships will be awarded, thanks to a match from an anonymous donor. It is our goal and our privilege to honor young people who carry this heritage forward in their own way.
