Scholarship Description

The scholarships are awarded on a competitive basis to one Native American female student and one Native American male student. Each scholarship is for $10,000 -- $5,000 for the first year of college and $5,000 for the second year of college. The scholarship payments are made directly to the college or university on behalf of the recipient, so recipients must be preparing to attend in college. The selection committee is comprised of Tewaaraton Foundation Board members, lacrosse coaches and leaders from the Native American community.

The objective of the Tewaaraton Outstanding Native American Scholarship is to recognize and reward exceptional students’ academic and athletic achievement. This award is for Native American lacrosse players of Haudenosaunee heritage (i.e., Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga, Oneida, Mohawk, Tuscarora). All awards are based on academic achievement, athletic performance, and other factors that demonstrate an applicant's ambition and potential to succeed. Additionally, nominees are asked to articulate what you have learned from playing the game of lacrosse that has prepared you for future success. Since one of the primary goals of the Tewaaraton Outstanding Native American Scholarship is to honor lacrosse’s Native American roots, the selection committee will weigh this heavily in the application. Students must be seniors (12th grade) enrolled in high school and be in good academic standing to be eligible for this scholarship.
