I am a 45-year-old sophomore and a native to Los Angeles, California, who is returning to college after a 4-year-break. I dropped out of high school at the age of 16, was married at the age of 18, had my first child at 19, and went on to have two more children by 23 with my husband during my first marriage of ten years. Unfortunately, I was a victim of domestic violence and, though I had made many attempts to follow my dreams and return to school during my marriage, I never had the opportunity to do so. However, after ten years of attempting to make my marriage work and receive help, the marriage came to an end. I went on to enter a domestic partnership, then marriage, in a same-sex relationship. Together, we were raising 5 children, as my partner had 2 children of her own. Being a minority was quite difficult during a time when it was still not as widely accepted as it is today. We faced much discrimination and many social injustices while struggling to raise our large family in a metropolitan area where the cost of living was extremely high and the pay was not. In spite of the discriminatory ways of our neighbors, and the ridicule our children had to endure when they entered their classrooms at school for having two mothers, we managed to have a happy family. I was especially fortunate to also have the support of my spouse (once legalized in our state) to finally obtain my GED and return to school when I was in my 30's. It was quite difficult for me at first to gain the confidence I had lacked for so many years to believe in my ability as a student after having not been in school for the majority of my life and being so much older than my new classmates. I was quite surprised when I felt the acceptance that I did amongst the sea of diversity, including those of the LGBTQ community who were also in attendance. Though I was able to attend college for a short period of time and maintain a good GPA with high marks, I struggled to pay for my class materials
