Scholarship Description

The Japan Foundation was established in 1972 by special legislation in the Japanese Diet and became an Independent Administrative Institution in October 2003. The mission of the Japan Foundation is to promote international cultural exchange and mutual understanding between Japan and other countries. The Japan Foundation seeks to deepen the understanding of Japan and to promote Japanese Studies through several institutional grant programs and fellowship opportunities. We offer support to institutions, researchers, and graduate students.

The JFNY Grant for Japanese Studies aims to support projects that will enhance and deepen the understanding of Japan through academic exploration. These programs support institutions, researchers, and students in the field of Japanese Studies. Successful proposals generally take the form of conferences, colloquia, symposia, presentations, and lectures. Priority will be given to those projects that have secured additional funding from sources other than the Japan Foundation.
