Scholarship Description

All scholarship applicants must complete the registration process prior to submitting their first application. The Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund is only accepting registrations for victims who passed away on the day of September 11, 2001. Families of Freedom Scholarships are available for children who enroll in a program of postsecondary study by age 24. (Those children who turn 24 during their course of study must then continue their program of study uninterrupted, with the exception of summer vacations, in order to continue receiving scholarship assistance.)

Scholarship Details

  • Open to children of victims who passed away on September 11, 2001, with registrations limited to those victims
  • Available for eligible children who enroll in postsecondary study by age 24
  • Need-based awards are available, with a modest one-time award of up to $1,000 for students who show no financial need
  • Eligible to use funds for vocational, technical, or college education within the U.S., but only for undergraduate study

Eligibility Criteria

  • Open to children of victims who died on September 11, 2001
  • Students must enroll in a postsecondary program by age 24
  • Children of disabled registrants must have been born between September 12, 2001, and September 30, 2008
  • Must demonstrate financial need based on the Fund's financial need formula

Application Process

  1. Complete the registration process for Families of Freedom Scholarship Fund (registration is closed for disabled victims)
  2. Complete the Families of Freedom Scholarship application prior to starting your postsecondary education
  3. Reapply each year to confirm eligibility and determine the scholarship amount, as awards are based on financial need and may vary
  4. For those eligible for the Twin Towers Award, complete the Families of Freedom application to receive the award
