Scholarship Description

The Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB-AD) provides financial support for education and training programs to eligible service members and veterans. If you’ve served at least 2 years on active duty, you may qualify for benefits under this program, even if you’ve previously relinquished your benefits.

Eligibility Criteria

You must be honorably discharged and meet the requirements of one of these categories:

Category I

  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or 12 hours of college credit
  • Entered active duty for the first time after June 30, 1985
  • Had military pay reduced by $100 per month for the first 12 months of service
  • Served continuously for:
    • 3 years, or
    • 2 years (if that was your enlistment agreement), or
    • 4 years under the 2 by 4 program (Selected Reserve after active duty)

Category II

  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or 12 hours of college credit
  • Entered active duty before January 1, 1977 (or under delayed enlistment before January 2, 1978)
  • Served at least 1 day within other acceptable time frame
  • Had 1 day of entitlement under the Vietnam Era GI Bill as of December 31, 1989

Category III

  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or 12 hours of college credit
  • Do not qualify under Categories I or II
  • Had military pay reduced by $1,200 before separation
  • One of the following applies:
    • On active duty September 30, 1990, and involuntarily separated after February 2, 1991
    • Involuntarily separated on or after November 30, 1993
    • Voluntarily separated under VSI or SSB programs

Category IV

  • Have a high school diploma, GED, or 12 hours of college credit
  • Had military pay reduced by $100 per month for 12 months or made a $1,200 lump-sum contribution

Application Process

  3. Apply for benefits through the VA website or by completing VA Form 22-1990
  4. Submit any additional documentation requested
