Steve Silver's Beach Blanket Babylon “Scholarship for the Arts"

  • High school seniors throughout the San Francisco Bay Area are asked to submit a completed entry form along with a three-minute performance in one of three categories: singing, acting or dancing. Nine (9) finalists - three (3) from each category - will be selected by a panel of performing arts professionals and notified on May 9 and will perform their three-minute piece live at Club Fugazi (home of Beach Blanket Babylon) on June 6, in front of a panel of celebrity judges and an invited audience made up of their family and friends. One winner from each category will be presented with a $15,000 check from The Steve Silver Foundation and Beach Blanket Babylon toward their higher education.

    All applicants must be legal residents of the United States or one of its official territories and be seniors enrolled at a Bay Area High School or home schooled (within 100 miles of Club Fugazi in San Francisco). Scholarships are awarded based on talent; Grades and financial needs are not factors. Scholarship awards are contingent upon proof of enrollment at an accredited post-secondary institution. If you are chosen as a winner, you must agree to attend an accredited post-secondary institution within a year of receiving the scholarship award. NC Senator Proposes Taxing of Athletic Scholarships

In response to the NCAA's vote to allow athletes to profit from their names, images and likeness, Senator Richard Burr of North Carolina has proposed taxing those scholarships. Senator Burr tweeted: "If college athletes are going to make money off their likenesses while in school, their scholarships should be treated like income. I'll be introducing legislation that subjects scholarships given to athletes who choose to 'cash in' to income taxes." [...]
