Scholarship Description

The Alex Newton Scholarship was created to assist eligible students in Burke, Columbia, Richmond, McDuffie, or Warren County to continue their pursuit of a secondary education in mechanical engineering and to honor Alex Newton. This is a $500 renewable scholarship for each consecutive semester (renewable for up to four semesters) after the original award is made, provided all requirements are met for renewal. Applicants must be pursuing a an associate degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM) field at Augusta Technical College.

The applicant must be a resident of Burke, Columbia, Richmond, McDuffie, or Warren County and must be enrolling as a full-time student (12 credit hours) at Augusta Technical College. First consideration shall be given to a student in the pursuit of an associate degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology. Additional consideration shall be given to a student who needs financial assistance to continue his/her education in the pursuit of their chosen degree/career. Additional consideration shall be given to an applicant who will graduate with a 3.0 GPA or higher. The applicant shall have been active in community, church and/or extra-curricular activities.

The applicant shall complete the application form provided by the Community Foundation for the CSRA and provide a letter of recommendation and an unofficial transcript. The applicant shall provide a narrative setting forth personal goals, reasons for going into chosen field of study, and plans after graduation from college. The narrative shall explain the need for financial assistance and the benefit of receiving the scholarship. The narrative shall describe a time that the applicant performed a random act of kindness for someone or a time where they were on the receiving end of a random act of kindness, and how the event impacted the applicant and others involved. The narrative shall be between 500-750 words.
