Scholarship Description

Hostelling International USA (HI USA) is very excited to share with you that we are offering a travel scholarship to students aimed at helping travelers aged 18 to 30 realize their travel ambitions and dreams. At the core of HI USA’s mission is our desire to support people of all ages in their pursuit of travel as a means of better understanding the world and people from different cultures. We are aware that summoning the courage to travel is a big step, and we don’t want those who are eager to experience the world to be discouraged by the cost. With this is mind, we’ve established the HI USA Community Hostelling Fund to support travel scholarship programs.

Eligibility Requirements: In order to participate in the scholarship contest, applicants must meet the following criteria:

• Be 18 - 30 years of age • Be a US Citizen or Permanent Resident (possess a green card) or DACA recipient • Demonstrate financial need by meeting at least one of the following criteria: • Current Pell Grant recipient • household income level that does not exceed 300% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines • Exhibit a strong desire to explore the culture of a city while hostelling – a hostel stay is required for the award (minimum of two nights)

Dollar amount of Scholarship:

• The total amount of the award is $2,000

Date when scholarship will be awarded:

• January 15

Criteria regarding how scholarship will be awarded: A scholarship committee of residents will score and select awardees from completed, eligible applications based on the candidate’s ability to:

• Demonstrate financial need and limited travel experience • Present a compelling case on benefits of the proposed travel experience • Convey a genuine interest in enhancing intercultural understanding through travel • Express a desire to motivate others to travel

As a scholarship recipient, the candidate agrees to the following:

• Submit required documents, Images, Videos, and Complete Award Tasks • Attend at least 2 virtual workshops provided by HI USA offered from January 2 to March 1. (No travel is permitted until after that period). • Awardee must travel for a minimum of 5 nights with a minimum of two nights spent in a hostel • Recipient must complete travel between March 1 and August 31 • Use the online scholarship management application to submit required documentation • At least 45 days prior to travel, contact your local HI USA Staff to reserve your bed. Complete a pre-travel survey and submit required documentation (room confirmation) with the pre-travel funds request for the first installment. Processing can take up to 30 days • During travel, participate in an approved hostel activity and explore the local community surrounding the hostel. Post at least three photos and/or status updates to Instagram and/or Twitter using the hashtag #exploreamerica and tagging @HIUSA • Within 30 days of return, complete a post-travel survey and submit a post travel funds request with required documentation (a report of your travels as per HI USA guidelines and upload of travel images and videos) Information about how the student will be notified: • All applicants will be informed of the local committee’s decision via email or phone call by January.
