The scholarship is designed to increase the number of qualified mathematics teachers by partnering with local, State and National organizations committed to preparing teachers and educating children in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Bethune-Cookman University has a partnership with two school districts in Florida (Volusia County and Flagler County) and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Volusia and Flagler Counties. The overall goal of the 5-year Robert Noyce Scholarship project at Bethune-Cookman University is to encourage talented science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors to be also certified as teachers of middle grades mathematics (5¬-9) in high need educational agencies. The Robert Noyce Project at B-CU will award two-year up to $18,000 per year scholarships to 40 STEM students who demonstrate commitment to become teachers of mathematics. Additionally, to stimulate early interest of first- and second-year STEM students in K¬12 teaching careers, 50 informal learning internship stipends of $4,000 each will be awarded to B¬CU STEM students during the project.
