The Montford Point Marine Association believes "There is no better way to protect the future than by helping our youth with their higher educational goals." DC 6 is proud to honor this commitment by offering scholarships to individuals in the DC, Maryland and Virginia area. Applicants must be a graduating high school senior with grade point average of 3.0 or above and must demonstrate extra curricular activity at school, community or church. Must submit one official (sealed) copy of your transcript and provide proof of acceptance to an accredited trade school, junior college or university. Must provide two letters of recommendation highlighting outstanding leadership qualities.
Applicants must provide a typed 1,000-word essay on the following topic: African-American soldiers have fought for the United States Military throughout history, despite discriminatory policies built on racial segregation. The men enlisting in the Montford Point Marines endured multiple hardships during the integration of the United States Marine Corps, yet through it all they persevered. While the stories of some black soldiers have been memorialized in movies such as Red Tails and Tuskegee Airmen; little is still known about The Montford Point Marines. As a scholarship recipient how will you share the legacy of The Montford Point Marines with others so their history lives on?
