The “Festival da Cultura Portuguesa” Scholarship Program was established with the purpose of supporting Portuguese American students in the pursuit of their higher education goals. The merit-based scholarships are awarded to students of Portuguese ancestry who have demonstrated outstanding achievement in their academic careers and who show a commitment to completing an approved plan of study. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent legal U.S. residents and residents of the Tri-State Area (New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut) for 6 months or longer. Proof of residency is required. Applicants must be of Portuguese ancestry of an aggregate of at least 25%. Applicants must also be full-time students attending a baccalaureate degree program at an accredited college or university in the United States beginning the fall of the year the scholarship is awarded and have a minimum GPA of 3.0.
The Scholarship Committee of the “Festival da Cultura Portuguesa” will have the sole responsibility for the selection of the scholarship award recipients based upon the following: academic record, extra-curricular activities, community service, and a one to two-page essay addressing the questions related to the impact your Portuguese ancestry has had upon your own personal development, and the role you anticipate that your Portuguese ancestry will play in your future. Applicants will be asked to discuss any specific career goals for the future or any community involvement that might be pertinent, as well as the importance of a Portuguese Club in your community. Applicants must also demonstrate ways they have or plan to involve the youth in a cultural organization. For more information or to apply, please visit the scholarship provider's website.
