Scholarship Description

Who Can Apply?

The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is open to individuals between the ages of 13 and 18. To be eligible:

  • You must be 13 or older by 12:01 AM PDT (West Coast USA) on April 1st of the year the scholarship is awarded.
  • You should not be older than 18 (not yet 19) as of 11:59 PM PDT (West Coast USA) on October 1st of the year the scholarship is awarded.

The challenge welcomes submissions in English from a diverse range of participants, including homeschooled students, those with disabilities, and students from around the world. For additional details, refer to the Rules.

How to Apply?

Step 1: Sign Up

To apply, follow these steps:

  • Select a Topic: Choose a theory, concept, or principle in physics, life sciences, or mathematics. It should be important to understand but challenging to explain.
  • Create a Video: Develop a short video (not exceeding 2:00 minutes) to communicate the chosen idea. Be engaging, illuminating, and imaginative. Consider using visual tools like animations, simulations, or physical demonstrations.
  • Submit Your Application: Submit a YouTube video link in your application.
  • Join the Breakthrough Facebook page.
  • Share your video on your Facebook page.
  • Participate in Peer-to-Peer Review: Engage in the Peer-to-Peer review where you view and score submissions from five (5) other contestants.

Additional Information:

  • The chosen topic should be from physics, life sciences, or mathematics.
  • Be creative in presenting your video.
  • Actively participate in the Peer-to-Peer review process.

Important Dates:

  • You must be 13 or older by April 1st.
  • The application deadline is June 25th.
  • Peer-to-Peer review and scoring period July 10th.

When you take part in the Challenge, you don’t just compete – you also play an important role in the judging process.

Once you’ve registered and submitted your application, making sure it’s complete and valid, you’ll be requested to participate in the Peer-to-Peer Review process. In order to qualify for the Challenge, you must score at least five (5) other submissions by July 10th, at 11:59 PM PDT (West Coast USA).

After that, you may also be asked to review and score additional videos as well. The Peer-to-Peer Review is great fun; you may learn about some new aspects of Science or Math – and you get to check out the competition! Scholarship Search
