Hi! My name is Rayya Cao and I’m a direct descendant from the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, the only federally recognized tribe in the state of Alabama located in Poarch, AL. I’m also a current high senior at Petal High School located in Petal, MS. I’m involved with my school’s CTE (Career Technical Education) Sport Medicine I & II course. The past 2 years of being in sports medicine has taught me how to properly care for athletes while giving them the best treatment they can receive to get back to what they love doing best. During my experience in Sports Medicine, I’ve been certified in the American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED Program, which gave me the opportunity to see first hand in a life crisis on what to do and how to properly save a person’s life. I’ve traveled to Washington D.C. for the past 2 years to represent my tribe to discuss current issues on what’s going on with Native Americans, rights and responsibilities of dual citizenships, and the complex relationship between tribal nations and the federal government. During my experience in Washington, DC, I’ve met with tribal leaders and the USET (United South and Eastern Tribes Inc) Council, I’ve gotten a authentic look at the American political system. I’ve learned to examine historical tensions between native nations and the U.S. federal government while exploring Washington’s famous monuments, memorials, and institutions. My experience in our nation’s capital also taught me good leadership and social skills while developing and presenting a Tribal Action Initiative after speaking with experts about issues facing Indian Country today.
