The USDA/NIFA National Needs Fellowship Program was designed to give opportunities to underrepresented groups in the food and agricultural professions, including aquaculture and fisheries. UAPB is looking for three highly motivated individuals from these groups (e.g., African Americans, Native Americans, Hispanic, etc.) to participate in a rigorous academic and professional development program culminating in a PhD to prepare them for high-level careers in aquaculture and fisheries. This intensive 36-month Ph.D. traineeship program will provide three students from under-served groups with comprehensive education and skill sets to make them highly competitive for careers in the USDA Targeted Expertise Shortage Area of Animal Production. Each student will focus on one of the following project areas: 1) Fish physiology; 2) Fish health; or 3) Fish nutrition. Faculty advisors will mentor students in research projects that will require close interaction with industry professionals and stakeholders, academics, and/or state and federal government agencies. Students will also obtain leadership training through a combination of on-campus and professional activities.
Applicant must be a US citizen or national with MS degree in aquaculture, fisheries, natural resources or similar field; GPA, 3.0; GRE 197 (verbal+quant.).
