  • Scholarship Description
  • The primary purpose of the Virginia Teaching Scholarship Loan Program (VTSLP) is to provide financial support to students who are preparing to teach in one of Virginia's critical shortage teaching areas.

    Eligibility:
    -Be a teacher candidate at an accredited public or private four-year institution of higher education in the commonwealth
    -Undergraduates must be at least sophomores who were in the top 10% of their high school class or have a high school GPA equivalent of an A average
    -Be enrolled full-time or part-time in an approved teacher education program or are participants in another approved teacher education program
    -Maintained a cumulative 2.7 GPA or its equivalent
    -Be nominated by the institution where they are enrolled
    -Meet one or more of the following
    -Enrolled in a program leading to an endorsement in a critical shortage area as established by the Board of Education
    -Be a male teacher candidate in an elementary or middle school education program
    -Be a minority teacher candidate enrolled in any teacher endorsement area
    -Be a student in an approved teacher education program leading to an endorsement in career and technical education
    -Candidates who previously received funding through the Virginia Teaching Scholarship Loan Program are not eligible.

    Upon program completion, the scholarship recipient must begin teaching in the public schools of the Commonwealth in the first full academic year after becoming eligible for a teaching license, and fulfill the designated teaching obligation for the same number of years that he was the beneficiary of such scholarship. If the recipient fails to honor the obligation, the scholarship becomes a loan must be paid back to the Commonwealth of Virginia.
