Follansbee Scholarship

Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays (PFLAG) is a national organization of approximately 250,000 families organized in 500 chapters across the United States. It is a family-based organization of caring people from all walks of life working together for the benefit of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and intersex (LGBTQI) communities. The Sacramento Chapter of PFLAG is pleased to be able to offer one $1,000 scholarship to a graduating senior or a first-year student enrolled in a two- or four-year college from the wider Sacramento area. The scholarship is named in honor of The Rev. and Mrs. Merrill Follansbee, chapter founders and proud parents of a gay son.


In order to be eligible for these funds, applicant must meet the following requirements:
- Be a graduating high school senior or college freshman
- Self identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, questioning or intersex
- Demonstrate an interest in service to the LGBTQI community
- Have applied or presently enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education in pursuit of either an associate degree leading to transfer credits towards a bachelor’s degree, or a bachelor’s degree program at a four-year college

Applicant must provide the following documents:
- A completed scholarship application form
- An unofficial copy of applicant's high school transcript showing a minimum GPA of 2.5
- One letter of recommendation that testifies to applicant's LGBTQI status and community involvement
- An essay on the topic “My Vision for the LGBTQI Community”; essays are to be typed, 12-point with one-inch margins and no more than two pages in length
- A copy of applicant's individual resume which outlines extracurricular activities, community volunteer work, work experience, special interests and talents, and honors or awards received
