  • Scholarship Description
  • The Science, Mathematics and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service is a scholarship for service program that provides students with a stipend (starting between $22,500 and $38,000 per year), full tuition, health coverage, book allowance of $1,000, and other education expenses.

    SMART has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support the education, recruitment and retention of undergraduate and graduate students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) studies. The SMART Scholarship for Service Program is open only to U.S. citizens and nationals, and students must be at least 18 years of age to be eligible. There is an employment opportunity with the DoD with this program.

    Eligibility:
    -Must be a U.S. citizen
    -18 years of age or older
    -Able to participate in summer internships at DoD laboratories
    -Willing to accept post-graduate employment with the DoD
    -A student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
    -Pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in one of the approved disciplines
    -Undergraduate applicants must be currently enrolled in a regionally accredited U.S. college or university and have a high school diploma/GED. Current high school students are not eligible to apply.

    -Graduate applicants can be either currently enrolled in a regionally accredited U.S. college or university or awaiting notification of admission to such. If awaiting admission, you must be accepted for entrance in the upcoming fall term.

Yale to Ditch "Freshman", "Upperclassmen", Adopt Gender-Neutral Terms

In an effort to modernize, Yale will no longer use the terms "freshman" and "underclassmen" and will instead adopt gender-neutral terminology, such as "first-year" and "upper-level students." University officials still anticipate students and faculty to use the old terminology, since they're "deeply ingrained in our everyday language and in Yale's history."

The new terminology can be found in the Undergraduate Regulations and the First-Year Handbook and is expected to appear in all Yale College's publications and communications by the start of the 2018-2019 academic year. The effort to phase out the older terminology is "a piece of a larger movement to reflect the diversity of college campuses" and also in part because the "two words in particular are gendered," according to Jennifer Keup, Director Of the National Resource for the First-Year-Experience and students in Transition.
