  • Scholarship Description
  • The M3 Challenge spotlights applied mathematics as a powerful problem-solving tool and as a viable and exciting profession. Participating students are encouraged to explore and bolster their mathematical modeling know-how to position themselves for success. The specific real-world problem that is posed each year is entirely unknown to participants until they log in during challenge weekend. Scholarship prizes total $150,000, and there are no registration or entrance fees whatsoever. The challenge is entirely Internet-based with no registration or participation fees. Each high school in the U.S. (including U.S. territories and DoDEA schools) may enter up to two teams of three to five junior and/or senior students. Homeschool and cyber-school students may also participate.

    Eligibility:
    -Homeschool and cyber school students may either form their own teams or request to participate on their local public high school team. All efforts to contact the public school district in which they reside are up to the home or cyber schooled student. A signed Homeschool Affidavit Form is required for each home schooled student participating in the challenge. A signed cyber school affidavit form is required for each cyber schooled student participating in the challenge
    -International and exchange students may participate in the challenge provided they are officially enrolled in an eligible team's high school at the time of registration and through completion of the challenge
    -Children, grandchildren, and siblings of employees, officers, directors, or trustees of SIAM or The Moody's Foundation are not eligible to participate in Moody's Mega Math Challenge

Student Group Cancels Controversial Debate at University of Chicago

A controversial immigration debate was canceled this week by a student group at The University of Chicago - a university which "prides itself on protecting free speech, even offensive speech." The Edmund Burke Society, a conservative parliamentary debating society, canceled the debate, claiming it "could not assure an orderly event," particularly following the uproar over how the group had described the event.
