  • Scholarship Description
  • The Bonner Scholar Program seeks to transform the lives of students at twenty-seven specific colleges and universities as well as their campuses, local communities, and nation by providing access to education and opportunities to serve.

To achieve this mission, the Bonner Foundation provides four-year community service scholarships to approximately 1500 students (who are referred to as Bonner Scholars) annually. The scholarship serves those individuals who have high financial need and a commitment to service. It is designed to heighten the overall education a Scholar receives by asking students to engage in ongoing service work and helping them develop the tools and the knowledge necessary to make that work meaningful and lasting.

Since its first class of Bonner Scholars in 1990, the Foundation and the 27 colleges and universities have continued to elaborate on the service scholarship model.

To qualify for a Bonner Scholarship, you must apply directly to one of the 27 colleges and universities that participate in the program.

When you contact the admissions offices at these institutions, ask them if you can receive a Bonner Scholar application. Of course, you'll have to be enrolled as a student at one of these schools. The Bonner Scholars Program is designed for students with high financial need who have a demonstrated commitment to performing community service. Our motto is “access to education, opportunity to serve.”

Student Sends Flirtatious, Then Menacing Emails to Professor

April 3, 2018

by Susan Dutca

A professor at the University of California at Santa Cruz believed she was "unstalkable" up until a student of hers began sending messages that were at first flirtatious and ultimately turned to threats of rape and murder. Much of the #MeToo conversation in higher education revolves around educators who "harass" or "target" students; but some educators themselves actually become vulnerable to harassment by their own students and remain silent out of a sense of guilt, embarrassment, and often the fear of losing their jobs.
