  • Scholarship Description
  • Mr. and Mrs. Selby were very interested in helping local students with limited financial means pursue a higher education, with the goal of not only achieving a meaningful career but also of helping their community. Today, "Selby Scholars" are undergraduate students with exceptional potential who embrace Mr. and Mrs. Selby's values of leadership and service. Like all of our funding, this scholarship program is only available to residents of Sarasota, Manatee, Charlotte or DeSoto counties.

    Applicants must be either:
    -Graduating seniors from any high school in those 4 counties
    -Graduating Associate degree students from any state college in those 4 counties (SCF, Edison, or S.FL Community College)

    All applicants must be planning to pursue a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university on a full-time basis. Students who are already in college, or those planning to pursue a 2-year degree are not eligible.

    Scholarship awards will be based on:
    -Demonstrated financial need
    -A minimum 3.0 (unweighted) grade point average
    -High school (or state college) transcript
    -ACT or SAT scores
    -Evidence of personal growth potential through letters of recommendation from teachers and community members
    -Perspective on personal values and future plans outlined in essays
    -A personal interview

"OK to Be White" Signs a "Sign of the Times"?

"It's okay to be white" signs were scattered on college campuses across the country, as well as in Canada over the past week. Reportedly, the signs were first suggested on an online chat forum called 4chan, calling on people to place posters in their area on Halloween night. At Harvard Law School, at least 20 handmade stickers with the message "It's ok to be white" were posted on light poles and electrical boxes. Harvard Law's Dean of Students Marcia Sells condemned the posters, stating the posters and stickers are "intended to divide us from one another" and that "HLS will not let that happen here." The Department of Public Works removed the stickers shortly thereafter. Even after they had been removed, the message continued to circulate via social media through hashtags and videos, gaining both condemnation and support. [...]
