  • The Betty B. Albright Memorial Scholarship was established in 1991 by her family to commemorate her contributions to the Bakersfield community as a social worker and to acknowledge those traits and qualities that made her special to her friends and family. She graduated USC in 1948 with a B.A. degree in Sociology and moved to Bakersfield almost immediately thereafter. Betty worked for the Kern County Welfare Department as a social worker and social services supervisor for 22 years. Betty Albright believed in the value of having an education and the value of hard work. She also believed that people needed to be self-reliant and responsible for themselves. Through this scholarship, the Albright family seeks to honor the memory of their wife and mother in assisting students who may exhibit qualities of Betty B. Albright.

    Eligibility:
    -Upper-division student majoring in sociology
    -Minimum 3.0 GPA (2.75 if working full-time)
    -Strong work ethic
    -Resident of Kern County, CA
    -Supplemental question: Do you expect to receive other forms of financial assistance? (i.e., federal or state grants, federal student loans, VA or Rehab assistance, etc.)

A Santa Barbara City College Professor believes he is facing "collateral damage" for defending a professor he had invited to SBCC as a guest speaker.
