Scholarship Description

The Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance (SUWA) is excited to announce our Stewardship Scholarship Essay Contest for BIPOC students in all areas of study. Students are invited to write a 750-1250 word essay on the topic of Land Stewardship or Trust in the More-Than-Human World for a chance to win a cash scholarship for your educational endeavors. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis.

Scholarship Details

  • Scholarship award of $450 upon completion of the program
  • Participation in a two-day public land stewardship project with SUWA staff
  • Opportunity to create reflective media (written or visual) after the project
  • Loaned camping gear, supplies, and transportation available upon request

Eligibility Criteria

  • Must be enrolled at least half-time in an accredited college, university, vocational, or technical school in Utah
  • Self-identify as a member of a historically underserved community
  • Commit to attending one service project with SUWA staff and volunteers

Application Process

  1. Complete the online application form.
  2. Indicate your self-identified underserved community status within the application.
  3. Participate in the two-day stewardship project alongside SUWA staff and volunteers.
  4. Create and submit a reflective piece (written or visual) about your experience.
  5. Receive a $450 stipend/educational scholarship upon completing the program requirements.

SUWA acknowledges the structural barriers many communities face when seeking solace in wild, natural places. Our Stewardship Scholarship program offers scholarships to students who join an immersive stewardship project on public lands in Utah with SUWA.
