Scholarship Description

Trib Total Media is proud to announce the Scholarship for Diversity in Media. This scholarship is designed to award exceptionally talented Journalism, Communication, or English Writing students who are culturally, ethnically or racially diverse. Minorities have been traditionally under-represented in newsrooms but we believe that all voices need to be heard and varied cultural perspectives need to be shared. Through this scholarship, we are encouraging promising young journalists from diverse backgrounds to pursue a career in our industry and bring diversity to local media.

Purpose: The purpose of the Scholarship for Diversity in Media is to award and inspire future journalism students from culturally, ethnically and racially diverse backgrounds. Each year, Trib Total Media will select one Western Pennsylvania student to receive up to $30,000 in scholarship funds awarded in annual installments of up to $7,500 each. The recipient also will receive a summer internship at Trib Total Media and, upon graduation, an offer for full-time employment.

Applicants must be high school senior planning to attend an accredited four-year college or university with a major in Journalism, English Writing or Communication and remain in the approved course of study through graduation. Must be a minority as defined by the Equal Employment Opportunity Program (African American, Hispanic, Native American, Asian or Pacific Islander, Multi-racial) who's primary residence is in the Pittsburgh region, including, but not limited to Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Greene, Westmoreland or Washington counties. Must maintain a minimum cumulative 3.25 GPA on a 4.0 scale and must complete summer internship(s) at Trib Total Media.

Applicants must submit a letter of application addressed to Scholarship for Diversity in Media Selection Committee stating intent to apply for the scholarship and a completed application along with their most recent transcript showing a cumulative grade point average and three letters of recommendation (no family members, please). Must submit three – five work samples (can be written work, photos or video). All applicants must participate in a personal interview with selection committee and complete a writing, spelling and general knowledge exam. Scholarship funds will be issued directly to the recipient’s campus and may not be used to pay back loans of any kind.
