  • Scholarship Description
  • The Beverly J. Smith Memorial Scholarship has been established by the Harrisburg Branch of AAUW to honor our past president. Ms. Smith was a nationally known and respected expert on refugee resettlement and immigration. She devoted her life to helping people of diverse nationalities begin new lives and obtain education, homes, health care, and legal advice.

    AAUW would like to honor her memory by assisting in the education of a woman working toward a bachelor’s degree. AAUW would especially like to assist someone who embodies Ms. Smith's vision.

    Criteria:
    1. Permanent resident of Dauphin, Cumberland or Perry County
    2. Attend an accredited college or university located in Pennsylvania
    3. Female student having completed at least 60 credits toward a Bachelor’s degree by end of May
    4. Enroll full-time as student in both the spring and fall terms
    5. Demonstration of academic achievement with at least a 3.4 GPA
    6. Demonstration of financial need

"OK to Be White" Signs a "Sign of the Times"?

"It's okay to be white" signs were scattered on college campuses across the country, as well as in Canada over the past week. Reportedly, the signs were first suggested on an online chat forum called 4chan, calling on people to place posters in their area on Halloween night. At Harvard Law School, at least 20 handmade stickers with the message "It's ok to be white" were posted on light poles and electrical boxes. Harvard Law's Dean of Students Marcia Sells condemned the posters, stating the posters and stickers are "intended to divide us from one another" and that "HLS will not let that happen here." The Department of Public Works removed the stickers shortly thereafter. Even after they had been removed, the message continued to circulate via social media through hashtags and videos, gaining both condemnation and support. [...]
