Competition for ice hockey scholarships varies greatly by school, as some colleges are known for their programs while others place more emphasis on their higher-visibility football and basketball team. Club teams have also become more popular, and while most college-based scholarships are awarded to players on the schools’ varsity teams, club players may also be eligible for athletic awards if that school does not have a traditional ice hockey program. Traditional ice hockey scholarships from big schools with the top programs are competitive, and require minimum GPAs in their eligibility standards.

Local groups also place less emphasis on talent than college-based awards, and often you just need to prove you have played the sport to be eligible for a scholarship. Many local league scholarships are also needs-based, or factor in academics, community service and extracurricular activities outside of ice hockey when distributing their awards.
