Last month, the FDA authorized COVID-19 vaccines for 12 to 15-year-olds. Previously, you had to be at least 16 years of age to receive any of the three approved COVID vaccines. Now, all high school-aged students can get vaccinated, and New York state has an interesting idea to incentivize getting a vaccine – offering students a scholarship lottery.

The New York state Vaccination Scholarship Incentive was created to “increase awareness of the availability and efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines” among 12 to 17-year-olds, according to their website. Students must fall within that age bracket and have received at least their first COVID vaccine dose to be eligible (students who received their first COVID vaccine dose at 17 years of age but are now currently 18 are also eligible.) Students need to ask their parents or guardians to enter them into the lottery for a chance to win one of 50 full-ride scholarships to a New York state public college or university. The scholarship lottery is open until June 29th at midnight EDT. 10 winners will be drawn every Wednesday until June 30th.

Winners will receive full tuition scholarships to any one of the two- or four-year CUNY (City University of New York) or SUNY (State University of New York) public colleges and universities in New York state. The scholarship will cover tuition, fees, room-and-board, and expenses. It appears student winners will get to choose which public college or university to attend with their full-ride scholarship.

For students who are residents of New York state, this is a great opportunity to not only to attend a college or university for free, but also avoid student loans and student debt altogether. If you’ve had your first COVID shot or are fully vaccinated, we encourage you to talk to your parents or guardians about entering you into this scholarship lottery.
