What is the Pep Boys Find Your Drive Scholarship? Pep Boys is committed to helping talented automotive technicians accelerate their careers through its annual scholarship program. This year, the program will award two $10,000 and six $5,000 scholarships to help students within the U.S. cover educational expenses for the upcoming school year. Applications will be open until May 27, 2022.
Why should I pursue a career as an automotive technician? You probably already love cars and working with your hands, but did you know that the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that there will be nearly 70,000 job openings per year for automotive technicians and mechanics over the next decade? This shortage of technicians will give you more choices and expand your opportunities to secure a good job. Not to mention, it places you in a better position to negotiate your wages.
Who is eligible to apply? Applicants for the Pep Boy Find Your Drive Scholarship must be accepted into or currently enrolled full-time or part-time in an accredited college, university, or trade school within the U.S. Applicants must be pursuing an automotive technician degree or certification and have a 2.5 minimum high school cumulative GPA. If already enrolled in an automotive technician program, applicants must have a 3.0 minimum cumulative GPA in the program. Pep Boys Team Members and children of current Team Members are eligible to apply.
Which documents are required? Applicants must submit their most recent official transcript of all academic work, as well as one letter of recommendation from a non-family member.
Do I need to write an essay? It’s up to you! Applicants can choose whether to submit a typed essay or a video explaining “Why I want to be a top technician.” They should include highlights on how they take ownership of their career, solve problems, learn new skills and work as a team player. Typed essay should be between 500 and 1,000 words, double-spaced. Video submissions should be no longer than 3 minutes and should be submitted as a YouTube or Vimeo link.
What happens if I am selected as a winner? Pep Boys asks that winners be available to accept the award in person on a specified date and in a specified location, if needed. Proof of enrollment and GPA will be required to release award disbursements to scholarship recipients. Funds will be paid directly to the school where recipients are enrolled. Current scholarship recipients will be eligible for preferred placement in the Pep Boys apprenticeship program and/or a full-time automotive technician position upon graduation. Past recipients of the Pep Boys Find Your Drive Scholarships are welcome to re-apply.
