As the cost of college continues to rise every year, more and more students are looking for scholarships to bridge the gap. And as many of you may already be aware, applying for a scholarship can take a fair amount of time and effort on your part.
Fortunately, while many scholarships have long essay requirements or high GPA standards, the Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship is different. Read below to learn how this scholarship works and how to increase your odds of being accepted.
The Amazon Future Engineer Scholarship is one of the best scholarships for STEM students. The scholarship pays $10,000 a year and is renewable for up to four years, for a total of $40,000! Winners will also get a paid summer internship with Amazon. The internship will be a 12-week paid experience held the summer after freshman year.
The company will select 400 students for the scholarship. The deadline for the next round is January 20, 2023, so those interested in applying should start working on their application now.
Current high school seniors who are enrolled in or have taken a class in computer science, engineering, or robotics may apply. If your school does not offer these subjects, you can also take an assessment from Amazon to be eligible for the scholarship.
To qualify, you must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident or have a work visa that is active for at least two years. You must also have a 2.3 GPA or higher.
Students should plan to major in one of the following areas to be eligible:
If you don’t see your planned major listed above, you can email the scholarship committee directly and ask them if the major qualifies.
You must be planning to attend a four-year accredited institution or transfer to one from a two-year school.
Students also need to have demonstrated financial need. Amazon does not state any specific income guidelines, so all students should apply.
The scholarship is designed for students who are committed to a career in computer science or engineering. To prove your dedication, highlight any clubs, hobbies or activities related to engineering, robotics or computer science. Be descriptive and show how you’re an active member or participant.
Amazon will send a survey to a teacher, preferably your robotics, computer science or engineering teacher. If you don’t have those courses available at school, you can also choose a teacher who knows you well.
Ask a teacher who you’re certain will give you a positive recommendation and be able to speak to your knowledge and skills in the engineering or computer science field.
You will need to include a PDF of your family’s most recent 1040 or individual tax return. You only need to include the first two pages of the 1040. Ask your parents if they have a copy of the tax return they can send you.
The essay requirement is fairly straightforward: “Tell us about your educational and career goals and objectives.” You can only write 250 words, so try to be concise and succinct while still showing why you’re a worthy applicant.
After you’ve written the essay, print it out, let it sit for a couple of days and read it over again. Then, have someone else read it. Try to write the essay early so you have time to ask a teacher, parent or mentor to edit it.
