Sleep-Deprived College Students: College to Open Nap Rooms

We've all been there: Going about our day without a care in the world when it dawns on us that (go figure) our term paper on the pros and cons of procrastination in the creative process is due tomorrow. Panicked, we consider emailing our professor an excuse about a death in the family but given we killed off Nana (who's actually alive and well back home) last semester during finals week, we decide it's best to pull an all-nighter. The next day, we're irritable, unmotivated and just plain sluggish and while the simple solution is to overcome procrastination and not leave an assignment until the last minute, the Art Center College of Design has suggested a different approach: a nap room on campus.

The Pasadena, Calif.-based college opened its first nap room last year in an effort to combat exhaustion among its mostly commuter students. "Our Nap Room is available for students four weeks during each 14-week term. We are a year-round program with three terms a year," said spokesperson Teri Bond. "The room is available 24 hours on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during those four weeks each term." And while there isn’t a determined space just yet, Art Center students are hoping to follow in the footsteps of the University of Colorado-Boulder and the University of Michigan in instituting a permanent nap room on campus. (For more on this story, click here.)

If you’re a fan of napping between classes, do you think it’s your university’s responsibility to provide nap rooms for students? Let us know what you think in the comments section. A nap room is an awesome idea! It would benefit students because the brain does most of its problem sloving while sleeping!

This is an amazing idea! Students need a rest once in a while to recharge their batteries!

I think this is a great idea! Let's face it, nobody learns well when they're running on little to no sleep. Students would be better off just staying home to sleep, but for those commuters, that is not possible. Also, scientists have proven that just a little nap can help students' brains better absorb the material by letting it all soak in before putting in even more information from another course. Overall, it's a brilliant idea. I feel overall success of the college will go up

For a college to provide nap rooms in an effort to combat exhaustion; certainly underlines the college attempts to place themselves in the needs of the students. As a college student, numerous assignments, projects, and essays must be completed during a specified amount of time for rigorous courses , along with the challenges that come with being away from home, and learning to be independent. No doubt college students find it difficult to remain consistant in a daily 8 hour night sleep. The idea of a "Nap Room" is excellent! Restoring sleep benefits is crucial to be able to retain information, stay awake and focused during courses, and the multiple health benefits from sleeping will allow a student to be even more successful. However, along with providing Nap Rooms, Informational discussions from professionals are also nessesary for students to understand why the Na Rooms are being provided. Not for students to slack off, but to remain strong and attentive.

They should put those in vo-techs and trade schools too.

I think they should use nap rooms on ALL COLLEGES. Let's face it, college kids need some shut eye they couldn't get at night because of studying or projects. Face it people this should be happening in all colleges everywhere, so college kids can have more relaxing and studying more easier, so they wouldn't be cranky or stressed or frustrated.

I think that it is a great idea, however, I don't know that it is the University's responsibility to provide this service as much as it would be just something that would add to the appeal for students who are college shopping. I think it may be something that puts a college nearer to the top of someone's list or may even be that little thing that makes the final decision. I think it's a great idea!

I think have nap rooms in college is one of the best ideas ever. I wish my college had nap rooms. I can definetly relate to this article because I tend procrastinate a lot which is one of my worst habits. Because of this I tend to get exhausted the next morning and not want to go to school. There is not really a all around quiet space except the library and the study rooms but they are not really comfortable to take a nap in.
