Since 1968, FTE has been committed to increasing diversity in religion and theological faculty in North America. For more than half a century, FTE has invested in supporting under-resourced and underrepresented scholars of religion and theological education.
Scholarship Details
- Administered by the Forum for Theological Exploration (FTE), founded in 1954
- Dissertation fellowship of up to $35,000 each
- Supports Ph.D. and Th.D. students in religion, theological studies, or biblical studies
- Focus on increasing diversity among religion and theology faculty in North America
- Applications open January each year
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant identifies as under-resourced and or underrepresented in theological education
- Enrolled in a Ph.D. or Th.D. program in religion, theological studies, or biblical studies
- Must have completed the coursework stage and be at the dissertation phase
- Intends to pursue a vocation in teaching and scholarship
Application Process
- Confirm eligibility, including dissertation-stage status in a qualifying doctoral program
- Prepare application materials outlining research focus, progress toward the dissertation, and vocational goals in teaching and scholarship
- Complete the FTE Doctoral Fellowship application when it opens in January
- Submit required documents such as curriculum vitae, research abstract, academic transcripts, and faculty recommendations as specified by FTE

Financial support is available for doctoral students who have completed the coursework stage of their Ph.D. or Th.D. program in religion, theological studies, or biblical studies.
