Scholarship Description

The Hearst Journalism Awards Program recognizes excellence in collegiate journalism across a wide range of media disciplines each academic year. For this year, there are 14 competitions available, including writing, photojournalism, audio, television, podcast, and multimedia categories.

Scholarship Details

  • 14 total competitions during the academic year
  • Four writing, two photojournalism, one audio, two television, one podcast, and four multimedia categories
  • Each participating university may enter two separate students per competition
  • Schools receive a $250 stipend per competition entered

Eligibility Criteria

  • Entries must have been published, aired, or posted while the student was an undergraduate journalism major or minor
  • Entrants must attend a domestic accredited college or university within the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (ACEJMC)
  • Photo entrants are not required to be journalism majors or minors
  • Only individual entries are accepted, except in approved team competitions

Application Process

  1. Access the Hearst competitions through the online application system
  2. Obtain login codes and application access from your journalism department or the Hearst Journalism Awards Program office
  3. Contact the Hearst Foundation for additional information or assistance
  4. Participating journalism departments select which two students to submit per competition
  5. Review specific category pages for detailed submission guidelines and deadlines

Up to $700,000 will be provided annually in scholarships, grants and stipends to participating and winning journalism students and accredited journalism undergraduate universities. Scholarship funds will be sent to the accredited university for the student’s benefit. The university will then distribute the funds per their discretion.
