We understand that teaching is a critically important, complex and intellectually challenging endeavor. We also recognize that learning to teach well requires time, sustained effort, and ongoing support and development throughout a teacher’s career. To assist with that development, the Knowles Teaching Fellows Program is divided into two phases, with each phase building on the next. Two key leadership development threads run through all five years of the program: practitioner inquiry and community-building.

Eligibility Criteria
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be a current high school student
- Must prepare an original speech addressing the assigned topic
- Must use evidence from at least three of the provided historical sources
- Must incorporate knowledge of U.S. history into the submission
Application Process
- Write a speech from the perspective of a Japanese American service member who served during World War II and is addressing students today.
- Explain the service member's motivation for enlisting despite the discrimination and civil liberties violations Japanese Americans faced during the period.
- Discuss the opposition or challenges the service member may have encountered and how people today might view the decision to serve.
- Examine the legacy of Japanese American military service and explain its relevance to civil liberties in the United States today.
- Support the speech with evidence from at least three provided sources as well as your own knowledge of U.S. history.
- Review the completed speech for accuracy and adherence to the scholarship requirements before submitting the application.
Valued at up to $50,000 for up to five years, the Knowles Teaching Fellows Program is awarded to America’s best and brightest new teachers of high school mathematics and science. Fellowship benefits are extensive and encompass financial resources, professional and leadership development, teaching tools and materials, and access to a coast-to-coast network of like-minded colleagues. Applicants must be entering their first, second or third year as teacher of record during the next academic year from now. Fellowship awardees will be announced in May
