The CFJS Scholarship competition is for amateur jazz musicians who are high school seniors or students in the first 3 years of college. Applicants must be residents of, or attend/plan to attend a college in Central Florida: Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Brevard, Lake or Volusia counties. There is no age restriction.
An initial screening of all applicants will require an audition audio or video containing 1 or 2 brief improvised choruses of 2 selections of different tempos (make clips short so they can be sent by e-mail). Send .mpg or .mp3 as attachments in an e-mail and be sure to include the student’s name. That is the preferred method, a CD or DVD can be sent in. Be sure that the student’s name is on the recording.
In addition to the musical recording, a letter of recommendation from an individual familiar with the applicant’s musicianship, character and commitment to jazz study must be submitted. Each of the ten (10) students selected for final judging will be sent further instructions. Applications, audio/video auditions, and letters of recommendation must be received by April 17th at 3:00 PM, to be considered. No exceptions.
Scholarship auditions will be held Saturday, June 3rd, beginning at 10:00 AM at the Blue Bamboo Center for the Arts in Winter Park, FL and are open to the public. A rhythm section of professional musicians will be provided and three adjudicators will score the performances.
