EmPOWERED To Serve Scholars Program

- Scholarship Description
We recognize the need to work alongside entrepreneurs, nontraditional partners and the next generation of leaders to build sustainable community solutions that will positively impact issues affecting personal well-being. Our mission to be a relentless force for a world of healthier, longer lives is more important than ever. That’s why the American Heart Association’s EmPOWERED to Serve™ is investing in students who are passionate about public health, health equity, and community engagement, especially those who are a part of marginalized communities, to diversify the STEM and social-sector pipeline. Racial disparities in student debt may contribute to the continued racial inequality in the United States.
Through the EmPOWERED to Serve Scholars program, we empower students to continue their journey in higher education to champion health equity by improving social determinants of health – the conditions in which people live and work that shape their health. Health inequity issues include food insecurity, safe housing, job opportunities, and access to health care. The Scholars program is an opportunity that is offered to undergraduate college students working as agents of change to create health equity in their communities, this year six students will be awarded $5,000 scholarships. EmPOWERED to Serve seeks to improve health outcomes and reduce the gap in health disparities among historically excluded and underfunded communities.
